Materials used in my work are natural and handcrafted whenever possible. I have 20 years of jewelry making experience and I create Artisan quality jewelry. Some of the beads you will find in my shop are as follows:
Hand blown moretti/ effettre glass. These are high quality glass beads. These beads are handcrafted here in the United States using glass rods from Murano Italy. I collaborate with 2 amazing lamp work artists. Michael Mc Dowell from Glassbeadhemporium in Chicago and Justacupofbeads from California.
Recycled Glass Beads from Indonesia and Ghana. These beautiful glass beads are handcrafted one at a time. Glass scrap is collected and crushed by hand into very small pieces
called frit another name for ground glass. The frit is then placed in molds that have been coated with kaolin
clay to keep the hot glass from sticking and heated in kilns until the
glass melts. In some regions once the beads are removed from the kiln the
beadmaker will now spin and work each bead into the right shape and form
the bead hole with an awl all before the glass has a chance to cool.
Sometimes the bead hole is made by inserting a cassava stem in the frit.
This burns up in the heat but leaves a hole in the bead. The finished beads come in soft colors of blues and greens but also
earthtones and some pastels depending on the available scrap glass.
They have a cool handmade look with a finish that looks like frosted
glass. Similar in appearance to beach glass but not as smooth.
Bone Beads from Indonesia and Africa. These tribal looking beads are made from animals bones collected after the animal is naturally deceased.
Metal Beads and Charms. I use only silver, brass and lead free alloy which is a form of lead free pewter. Most of my metal beads are made in Tibet.
Wood Beads. I use a wide variety of wood beads. I prefer the German, Peruivan and Japanese beads for their quality and colors.
Assorted glass beads. Most of my glass beads that are not handmade by Michael are made in Czechoslovakia or Italy. I also love beach glass and use it whenever possible.
Clay beads. I use fimo clay beads, raku handfired ceramic beads, Peruvian clay beads and Asian porcelain.
I also use shell beads, gemstones, natural stone and marble.
